Automatic PDF Delivery to your Tablet

Few weeks ago, couple of our readers (thanks Robin and Thomas!) told us they wanted the Kindle Direct Delivery feature to send PDF instead of the usual MOBI format. I was puzzled, since it would be too small to read the PDF on Kindle.

Turns out, they (like a lot of readers too, I later found out) use the Kindle app on their tablet. Now that makes perfect sense.

So we quietly rolled out that feature last week. Now you can go to your Subscriber Area to activate it.

And you’ll see the latest issue of Hacker Monthly (in iPad-optimized PDF format) automagically appear on your tablet every month.

Hacker Monthly in Newsstand

We’ve also partnered up with Kiurma to come up with Hacker Monthly in the Newsstand. The app will go live in the next few weeks. Stay tuned for more updates!

THN Magazine ripped off our design and code

"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery." But this is way more than that.

Rip-off, Original.

And it's not just the design. It's the code (most of the HTML + CSS) as well.

Now I have (or used to have) tremendous respect for the team behind THN magazine, but this is just blatantly copying and ripping off our entire site.

Update: Some discussion going on at Hacker News

Check out this great piece about Hacker Monthly on Nieman Journalism Lab (thanks, Andrew!):

Lim Cheng Soon’s story defies convention. It’s a story about the value of curation, the value of community, and, for some, the lasting value of print.

Lim is addicted to Hacker News, the popular social news site, and he wanted to solve his own problem of information overload — “to be able to go offline [entirely] and not to miss out,” he says. So he decided to start gathering up some of the most popular posts from the site and printing them in a magazine he calledHacker Monthly.

It’s gone from scratching Lim’s own itch to being a real business — one able to attract subscribers, advertisers, and money.

The story then ended up in the front page of Hacker News with some interesting comments:

From patio11:

Please keep the success of HNM in mind the next time you hear "Pfft, who pays for information you could find free on the Internet." HN readers just like you also do all sorts of weird things like paying money for software, paying money for services, paying money for media, etc etc.

From grellas:

This is far and away the most popular item in the reading area of our office, with many, many clients asking for copies of articles from it. It is a great product and I am happy both to subscribe and to feature it for clients. Lim has done something pretty amazing here.

All the supporters and subscribers of Hacker Monthly, I can never thank you enough.

Behind The Scenes: Making Hacker Monthly

This post shows you how I make Hacker Monthly. I promised my friend Jacques Mattheij (jacquesm in HN) to share this a couple of months ago, but never been able to finish the piece. Well, it's here now.

******

I start with a list of Hacker News' top submissions (>100 votes) for the past months, using @newsyc100 by @jeffmiller (thank you!). I go through each articles and choose it if fits for the magazine.

The filtering guidelines are pretty simple: no news (you don't want to read about iPad 2 release in Hacker Monthly), no blog rants, not from major publications (e.g WSJ, NYT) and not too lengthy (Hacker Monthly only has a 40+ page limits). Preferences are given to articles which are both educational and "intellectual-curiosity-challenging" (the Hacker News Mantra).

There is no limit on how many articles are chosen at this stage (as long as it fits the selection criterias). I really take my time in the articles selection and could use up to a week for this. Sometimes when I'm not sure whether the particular article is suitable for Hacker Monthly, I sleep through it and look at it the next day again.

From all of the chosen articles, I filtered the list to 15-20 articles for the upcoming issue (the rest are deferred to the issue after or special issue), with a healthy mixture of programming, startup, design and miscellanous (under "Special" section).

Asking for permission to publish from the original author is probably the toughest part. A lot of people just doesn't have a contact form/email address listed on their website. I have my own bag of tricks when it come to searching email address (worthy of a separate post), but when all methods fail, I will just leave a blog comment or message their Twitter account. After obtaining their email addresses, I email each of the authors personally to obtain their permission, biography and mailing address (if you didn't know already, every contributing author receives a print copy + 1 year digital subscription). This takes another week.

Next, I pass the article list to one of my proofreaders. Unbeknownst to many people, every single article which appeared in Hacker Monthly are proofread not once, but twice -- the first time by a professional proofreader and the final check by yours truly. Why? Because the majority part of the magazine are blog posts and they usually are littered with spelling and gramatical errors (like the one you're reading right now).

If the article requires graphic illustration, I will work with my illustrators. We start with bouncing off ideas with each other first, followed by plenty of sketches, before working towards the finished piece.

And finally, I design the magazine. I use Adobe InDesign for the job. This part is well covered here.

There are several tools I use to produce Digital Edition of Hacker Monthly. I use Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro to optimize it (so you could read high quality PDF with less than 10MB disk space), and Calibre to convert it into MOBI/EPUB format. I have an iPad and Kindle to test the different formats (great excuse to buy these gadgets in first place) before publishing it.

******

That's about it. I keep trying to improve the process every month, like having an additional proofreader (so it's proofread thrice), and using XML publishing workflow.

Lastly, I would like to take this chance to thank my subscribers and readers for supporting Hacker Monthly. I enjoy making it immensely.

If you still haven't try DuckDuckGo, you should. It's a different beast compared to Google (some even said it's the Old Google), and a lot of people (especially programmers) already switched to using it as their default, day-to-day search engine. Most importantly, as their full page advertisement in Hacker Monthly issue #7 said - Google tracks you, they don't (which is a fine ad by the way and got a lot of our readers talking).

---

Interested in joining DuckDuckGo to advertise on Hacker Monthly? Our demographic is really interesting (a perfect mixture of startup founders and programmers) and we give incredibly good deal to startups. Just drop us an email.

P.S: We don't accept every ads (only those that we've tried it ourselves and figured would benefit our readers).

If you've already read our latest issue, you might noticed we included the articles comment differently this time. Adopted from our special issue - The Debate (which still available for free download here), the comment(s) were inserted right after its article. And, the comment in response to the other comment were indented (to 12pt), making it just like the threaded comment on Hacker News.

In The Age of Distraction, Focus.

My hero Leo Babauta released a book called "Focus" (which made it to the Hacker News front page this morning). The PDF version of the book is 100% free for download and the premium version comes with lotsa goodies.

The reason I mentioned this here is a lot of our readers found reading Hacker Monthly to be a different, more focus experience compared with reading the same article on the web. Also, if you are a Hacker News addict and would like to take a break for a while, Hacker Monthly could be your cure. As Mark O'Connor said it best in his excellent article - "Discpline: Be The Machine":

Reading Hacker News is so tempting because it gives us a little kick of endorphins, but so does feeling good about yourself every time you override this impulse. When you start being disciplined just to prove you can, you’ve already won. Subscribe to Hacker Monthly – the beautiful magazine format gives you a reason to avoid reading too many articles in advance and takes away the fear of missing something important.

On Designing Hacker Monthly

The questions I've got the most since I started Hacker Monthly are "How do you design the magazine?", "What tools do you use?" and "What books/tutorials do you recommend?". This post answers all of the questions (and possibly more).

As you might already know, I'm not a designer. My only design experience is drafting up the simplest looking website or user interface in Adobe Fireworks (I never really gotten my way around Photoshop). When I was starting up Hacker Monthly, I wanted to outsource the design since I have zero experience in print. This turns out pretty costly, so I decided to do it myself. Now, it's the part of the job that I love the most.

To start, learn to use Adobe InDesign. The first version of Hacker Monthly was designed using Pages. It looked okay, but it just doesn't have that magazine feel. So countless hours of tutorials and books later, I ended up using InDesign. It's the best tool you can use. To save you the trouble, the only tutorial you need to see is Nigel French's Designing a Magazine Layout Hands-on Workshop on Lynda.com. Nigel French is exceptionally good at guiding through the total newbie (umm...me) on both magazine design principles and using InDesign professionally.

The other resource I recommend is the book titled "Editing by Design". I credit this book for many design decision I made on Hacker Monthly. Also, I bought a big pile of used magazines and carefully went through each and every design styles employed. Do this after reading "Editing by Design" and you will be amazed how much more you can learn by observing others' work.

Other than Adobe InDesign, the other important tool I use is my iMac 27". Using it to design a magazine is an absolute amazing experience. I still remember that I bought it 2 months before having the idea to do Hacker Monthly and I absolutely hated it first (I used it to code...imagine running textmate and terminal at fullscreen). Now, it became one of the indispensable tool for me.

Before I started designing the article, I've already constructed how the 'end picture' looks on my mind. I think imagination is a very important part to design. Next, I went on designing and arranging the layout of the article in InDesign to fit the 'end picture'. Then, I turn off the guides and grids and do a full screen view of the finished article. After that I printed the article out to see how it looks on paper. If I'm not happy with how it looks (or more importantly, feels), I'd do it again. I iterate this part again and again until I'm very happy with the finished product.

We have finally rolled out the long awaited subscription option.

The 12 Month Print Subscription plan costs $88, includes 12 issues of Hacker Monthly (with 40 - 56 pages & perfect bound), and delivers anywhere in the world (shipping fee costs $2 to $10 per issue depending on your location). There is also 12 Month Digital Subscription plan, costs $29 and delivers the latest Hacker Monthly in digital format (pdf, epub, mobi) to your email for the next 12 months.

As you might notice, we will be charging $3 for the digital version of Hacker Monthly starting from issue #4. The biggest reason we made this move is, if succeed, we will be sustainable, or in other words: we could continue producing high quality Hacker Monthly for a very, very long time. With that, we also could lower the cost of the print magazine, to encourage more readers to get the print version - which is the why we created Hacker Monthly in the first place.

Issue #3 finally got out the door, probably the hardest Ricky and myself ever worked. Make sure you check out the Tech Jobs section and the Operational Transformation article by Daniel Spiewak (it's really cool). Now that it's on print (if you didn't order the print, you can always download the PDF and print it out), you no longer have the 'tl;dr' excuse.

Print subscription is coming. It will be big for the readers outside US, UK and Canada. because I'm working (around the margins) to cut down the international shipping cost (which currently sets at a hefty $13.45 flat rate in MagCloud) for annual subscribers. I really wanted more people to experience the print edition.

It's a thing of beauty.

Hacker Monthly #1 Updates

It's already been a week since Hacker Monthly #1 was published and I'm still overwhelmed by its overall reception. It sold more than two hundred copies (my goal was a hundred), has been downloaded more than ten thousand times, and email subscribers have more than doubled (3,700 and counting).

Minor Revised Updates

We've quietly published a revised update of #1, which fixes some typos and errors and adds live links in the PDF version - largely thanks to our newly onboard proofreader: Ricky de Laveaga. If you have already read/purchased the magazine, there is no need to do it again as the changes are really minor.

Epub Version

We are currently working with a fellow HNer's startup - fifobooks.com to release a more readable Epub format of #1 (and all upcoming issues). Once published, readers can also go to the website and download Hacker Monthly #1 on the Ebook reader of their choice.

Print Subscription

Those who wish to purchase a whole year of issues without having to purchase each month individually can opt for our annual subscription, which will be available by the end of the week. It will cost $110 (inlcudes shipping).

Tweet Your Review
We've put up a page which contains tweets of what our readers think about Hacker Monthly. You can join by simply including a #hackermonthly hashtag in your tweet.

Frequently Asked Questions of Hacker Monthly

Firstly, thank you. Thank you for all the comments, ideas, critics, suggestions and support on Hacker News, Twitter or anywhere else.

Next, I will try to answer all the questions you have/might have about Hacker Monthly here:

Q. What about the copyright issue?

A. I will email the original authors for permission to print. Some will grant it, some won't and some won't even respond to my email. Till date, half of all the authors I've contacted have already granted me the permissions.

Q. Will you include the comments of Hacker News?

A. Of course. Similar to the articles, I will email the original commenters for permission. Oh, if you are a regular commenter in Hacker News, pretty please, put your contact information in your profile (a lot of the members just leave it empty), that would save me a lot of fuss trying to look for your email around the web.

Q. How will you select the articles and comments?

A. Articles/comments which have more than 80 votes, in the past 30 days. In other words, I'm not the one selecting the articles - you are. However, I will be filtering out articles that are time-sensitive (like the recent iPad related news), or from a major print media (e.g WSJ). Comment wise, all goes.

Q. When will be the first issue?

A. 1st June 2010. Mark your calendar. Wait, you actually don't need to. Just subscribe here.

Q. Have you printed a magazine before?

A. There's always a first time for everything. This is mine.

Q. How will you print the magazine?

A. Using MagCloud, a cool POD service for magazines.

Q. Will you deliver to [insert your country here]?

A. Currently, MagCloud only delivers to US, UK and Canada. If you are not living in one of the listed countries, you will have to settle for the free PDF version for now.

Q. How much will each issue costs?

A. Around $9, with 30-40 pages, less shipping.

Q. Will you create an iPad/Kindle version for it?

A. Not yet. For now, I'm focusing all my energy to making the first print happen.

Q. Can I grant you the permission to reprint my articles and comments in advance?

A. Yes and that would save up tremendous amount of time for both of us. You could do that by emailing me at cheng.soon@hackermonthly.com.

I think that's all for now. If you have more questions, feel free to put them in the comments.

Why Hacker Monthly?

My Dilemma

I have a dilemma. I don't want to spend more time on the internet besides working, but I don't want to miss Hacker News either.

The Dream

Then, I dream of holding a magazine contains the best, timeless articles from the web chosen for me by the brilliant HNers. The magazine should be around 30-40 pages thick, printed on high quality glossy paper. Its cover should be some kind of incredible piece of artwork making the magazine looks like a collector's item.

Hacker Monthly

Nobody is responsible for making my dream come true, except myself. Well, the next thing I knew, I'm on my way creating Hacker Monthly.
